Fad Diets: How to Spot Them

The pattern

Fad diets share a script: one food group is poison, results come in 7–14 days, and there is a product in the checkout. They work for a month because they cut calories, then they break because nobody lives inside a rule-set that forbids fruit or dinner with friends.

How to test a claim

  • Does it require a book, shake, or exclusive forum?
  • Does it promise fat loss from a spot on the body?
  • Does it forbid whole foods that healthy people eat?
  • Would you still do it in six months?

If the answer is a sales page, skip it. Use a modest deficit, mostly simple food, and lifting.

Two examples this site used to cover at essay length

Kimkins was a low-calorie internet diet with a fraud story attached. Extreme restriction plus laxative culture is not a program. It is a warning.

The Special K diet (replace two meals with cereal) “worked” by shrinking calories. Cereal as a personality is still a breakfast choice, not a lifestyle. Eat the cereal if you like it. Do not make it the whole plan.

For the longer hall of shame, see top fad diets. For food that is actually useful, start with 10 foods worth eating.
