Dumbbells in front of a stationary bike and a treadmill

Cardio Before or After Weights?

By Answer Fitness editorial ·

If the point of the visit is to get stronger, lift first and put cardio after, or on another day. If the point is a run, bike, or conditioning session, do that first and keep the lifting lighter. Doing both in one visit is fine for general health. It is a poor idea only when the cardio is long and hard enough to wreck the lifting you came to do.

What “interference” actually means

Concurrent training means endurance work and lifting in the same program. A 2012 meta-analysis by Wilson and colleagues found that people still got stronger and built muscle when they did both, but power dropped more, and running alongside lifting interfered more than cycling. More frequent and longer endurance work lined up with smaller gains. The paper does not say “never touch a treadmill.” It says a lot of hard running on top of lifting costs more than a little easy cycling.

The World Health Organization still wants adults to do aerobic activity across the week and to strengthen major muscles on at least two days. Order is a scheduling choice. It is not a choice between health and lifting.

A simple week

Two or three lifting days, with any hard intervals on a different day or after the lifts if you still have legs. Walking can sit almost anywhere. A hard run immediately before squats is the combination most likely to make the squats sloppy. Cycling is usually easier to pair than running, which matches the 2012 finding, but it can still tire the same muscles you were about to train.

If you want intervals, use the HIIT page and keep them to one or two days, not after every lift. How many days belong in the week at all is in how often you should work out.

What this page will not claim

There is no best order for every person, and no promise that lifting first burns more fat. Fat loss still depends on the week of food and activity, not on whether the bike came before the dumbbells. Separate the sessions by several hours when you can. When you cannot, protect whichever one matters more that day.
