Weight Loss Plateau: What To Do When the Scale Stalls
First: is it a stall?
Water, glycogen, and a salty dinner move the scale more than fat does in a week. Use a 7-day average. If that average has not dropped for three weeks and photos/waist agree, then you have a stall. One high morning is weather.
Usual causes
- Portions crept. Sauces, weekend drinks, “bites.”
- Steps fell when the diet got boring.
- Sleep dropped and hunger rose.
- You are lighter now, so maintenance is lower. The old deficit became maintenance.
Fixes in order
- Hold calories two more weeks if the average is still edging down.
- Trim 150–250 calories or add a 20–30 minute walk. Not both as a panic.
- Keep protein and lifting so the loss is fat. See calorie targets.
- If you have been dieting 12+ weeks, take 7–14 days at maintenance. Then resume a small deficit.
Do not add two hours of HIIT and a juice cleanse. Related: training plateaus are a different problem — load, not the scale.
