Calorie Cycling

Calorie Cycling: What It Is and Whether It Works

What it is

Calorie cycling (old name: zig-zag dieting) just means you do not eat the same calories every day. You put more food on lifting days and less on rest days. Weekly average still decides fat loss or gain.

What it is not

It is not a hack that “confuses your metabolism.” Your liver is not a puzzle box. If the weekly total is a surplus, you gain. If it is a deficit, you lose. Cycling only changes how hungry and how strong you feel on a given day.

A simple version

  • Pick a weekly average from your fat-loss target.
  • Add 200–300 calories on the three lifting days (mostly carbs around the session).
  • Subtract the same amount from rest days.

If that sounds like a second job, eat the same each day. Consistency beats clever. Related: when to eat around training.
