What Does Body Composition Mean?
Definition
Body composition is what your mass is made of: fat tissue, skeletal muscle, bone, organs, water. The scale only sees the sum. That is why “I lost 2 kg” can be a great week or a dehydrated week.
Why lifters care
The goal of most training is not a smaller number. It is more muscle and less fat, or at least keeping muscle while fat comes off. Lifting in a deficit exists for this reason.
How to measure without a lab
- Waist at the navel, same time of day.
- Calipers if you will practice the same sites.
- Photos every 2–4 weeks in the same light.
- Strength going up or holding in a cut is a green flag.
DEXA and cheap scales with “body fat %” are noisy. Use them as trends, not gospel. BMI does not measure composition at all.
